This last Christmas we joined Rob and Joss and Froggy 92.9 with a request – let’s clean up this town and remove those dead Christmas Trees. Its cold and all of my summer flowers have officially been killed off in the freeze. Winter has arrived! I haven’t written a blog lately. Summer was so busy and then Fall happened. My intention was to talk about the historic Daniels School in this little ghost town of Venado where we live out Mill Creek. Then our neighbor died tragically throwing our small community into anger, confusion and sadness. Do we not live in a safe place? These questions swirled around us as we began attending neighborhood meetings. We began talking to one another. We are waving to each other. We are watching out for each other. We are, in short, becoming a community again. This is how I image Venado must have been at one time. A small secluded logging town in the west mountains of Healdsburg.
Venado is the Spanish word for deer or venison. The hamlet in the hills eight miles west of Healdsburg got its name from Stillman Batchellor, a mining engineer turned fruit grower who settled in the area in the early 1900s after working in Cuba and Mexico.
Even before Batchellor established his El Venado Ranch, settlers were attracted to Mill Creek by the mining, logging and tanbark. March’s Mill, one of the earliest sawmills in the county, gave the creek its name in the 1850s.
A treasure remaining from this lost town is the Daniels School. The Daniels school is a 120 year old one room schoolhouse now designated as a Historical Landmark in Sonoma County. It is located at 8162 Mill Creek Rd. and it is being donated, along with the surrounding ½ acre parcel, to the Venado Historical Society by Richard and Bonnie Cussins Pitkin. The wish is to restore this wonderful historic building. One of our neighbors has volunteered the labor for tearing down and re-building. We at Image Tree Service are donating tree work to help clean up the area surrounding the school. The project hopes to begin in the Spring 2011. Besides the school house, about the only other remnant of the community is the redwood-shake Venado Post Office that operated from 1922 to 1941.
If anyone is ever out for a drive and wants to see some of these counties forgotten landmarks frozen in time take a trip out Mill Creek. There is a quiet tranquil beauty in these lush winter hills.

Spring – ITS Official

Spring is here and with it comes our daughter Ruby’s birthday, Earth Day, and Rattlesnakes.

Earth Day was a combined effort with what is normally Arbor Day for the City of Healdsburg. It took place at our newly constructed Giorgi Park. How this all came about is quite interesting. We at Image Tree were sitting around the conference table and hit on the idea of volunteering our services for something within the community. Frankly, we’ve been a bit slow and in this lull we have had a lot of time to think about other things besides the constant rush and overtime spent keeping the tree’s happy and healthy. Giorgi Park had just undergone its face lift and we decided keeping our new parks trees serviced was something we’d like to volunteer to do for the community. After reaching Mathew the City Arborist he told Jeff he was going to call him and ask if he would be willing to donate some tree service to Giorgi Park! So obviously this was meant to be.

The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Earth Day with Mrs. Giorgi herself (100 years old!) unveiled the park plaque rededicated to her husband the late Mr. Giorgi. I had spoken with Dick Giorgi , their son, earlier in the day. It was his father that the park was named after. The original Mr. Giorgi was a large park of the Healdsburg community – fire, police, politics. There were many local faces ther and it was enjoyable to see old and new friends. Our table was very hands on with examples of beetle infested wood, vintage logging tools, sap marbles, bird nests, bird houses, families of pine cones, fire damaged trees (kept perfectly preserved like a sculpture but for the fact of the trunk burnt clear through at the base). Books on trees houses, Healdsburg history and Northern California wildlife. Ruby ran a small table next to Jeff and I for the kids. She had finger painting and a coloring activity book we made. Leo our fastest climber gave a demonstration and scaled one of our parks beautiful Oak trees. To the tangled crowd of children below, whom a few kept insisting, was going to fall. No falling and Leo and his children go to enjoy the rest of the days festivities. All in all a beautiful new park for our town and a great event. Thanks to everyone.

Now the scary part of spring. Rattlesnakes. We usually get baby rattlers in the spring off the back deck of the house which we kindly relocate or quickly dispatch. Don’t get me wrong- I’m a fan of rodent eaters. But, with a kid, dogs and a cat we have to be careful. Smiley Go Go (our newest pack member recently adopted from the Ukiah Animal Shelter) had been going with Jeff to work and having fun socializing and getting to know our community. Well she met a member of our community who was not so hospitable. ON a remote job site while casually going out for a pee, she encountered a rattlesnake. Poking her nose closer for a better look she got bit – twice. Jeff rushed her to the vet where they immediately rushed in the injections. Having been bit next to her nose and her neck her face freakishly swelled. The poor thing calmly submitted to all the doctors’ ministrations and we were told she “probably will live”. She rode home on Jeff’s lap and he stayed up with her till 3 o’clock in the morning. Now this puts a damper on this May 1^st It’s taking place at Giorgi Park and we are having a Mad Hatters Magical Tea Party. Mad Hat required. Tea sandwiches, pink lemonade, cupcakes and a magician on a beautiful blue afternoon. The dogs face swelling had gone down, Jeff is very tired, but all in all I think it’s going to be a great Spring. morning because it is our daughter’s birthday.
